Colorado Fire Pit Safety 101 – Know What’s Safe

As the weather warms up in Colorado and we begin spending more and more time outdoors, a favorite feature in many backyards is the Fire Pit. In today’s post we’re going to go over a few fire pit safety tips to help you safely enjoy your fire pit this season.

1. The Install

The first and one of the most important tips to stay safe while enjoying a fire pit begins with the install. Whether you choose a gas fed fire pit or an old-fashioned set up with logs, you want to make sure it is set up a safe distance from your home, tree branches, furniture, and other landscaping. It’s important to keep in mind that even if the flames aren’t high enough to touch surrounding objects, the heat can still cause damage.

2. Be Aware of Fire Bans

Between Colorado’s hot and dry summers and air pollution, it’s very important that you are aware of any fire bans in your area. Because this often varies by county, you can visit the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency site for more information and to see any bans in your area.

3. Practice Fire Safety

While it’s fun to gather close around a fire pit, you want to be aware of anything that may get too close. Blankets, beverages, and furniture can potentially cause a hazard. In addition, children and pets often require extra supervision and should be monitored at all times when a fire pit is lit.

4. Put Out the Flames

One very important tip if you’re using a traditional fire pit that burns logs is to make sure the fire is completely out before leaving. Even dying embers pose a potential danger since they can be easily stirred and begin burning again hours even days later.
